Speaker’s Showcase: 6 Q&A with Emiliyan Enev

We are starting the week with another set of inspirational words from our next speaker – Emiliyan Enev. His area of expertise is the re-engineering of processes based on blockchain technology. He analyzes existing systems and remodels them into more efficient and automated setups with intrinsic security. Identifying and testing new business models on top of emerging technologies is also part of his regular jobs.

Who are you?

I am the CEO of ReCheck – a blockchain startup for building and strengthening trust by adding digital facts to items. With ReCheck I am determined to contribute to the practical application of the blockchain technology as a means of transparent environment for safe transactions.

Why did you decide to join the speaker’s list of LibertyBits conference?

There are still few events in the region that are focused on the core principle behind the blockchain technology – transparency, security, and accountability. Too much attention and energy are spent on the speculative aspects related to crypto trading and Initial Coin Offerings. It is shortsighted, but quite predictable looking at the crypto prices soaring and the general hype, The LybertyBits conference is a lucky exception – events like this play an essential role in educating the general audience what blockchain is really about and what will bring to us. It is an excellent opportunity to bring together the people that are building actual products on top of this emerging technology and demonstrate the potential and the promise in practice.

What is your understanding of “liberty” (freedom) and what are the most underestimated threats to our modern society?

Freedom is about responsibility. For me at the core of the liberty is the firm understanding that you are accountable for your activities and you have the choice to make a significant difference. It is the most valuable gift that we have to determine our identity, contribution, and role in the society. And it is absolute – if you take a small part of it is no longer real freedom. It is what makes us humans and what adds meaning to life – like embodying and externalizing your personality in the world around you. Many things threaten the freedom and for me, the most dangerous of them are not the direct, aggressive and violent activities. More disturbing and detrimental are the organized measures aimed at instilling the perceptions that people are deprived of the possibilities to pursue their dreams and achieve what they desire most. If you allow yourself to live with the belief that some corporations and institutions determine your fate and everything is decided on the top level – you won’t exert freedom expecting someone else to decide and act on your behalf when it really matters.

What is the fascinating (the most inspiring) thing about blockchain for you?

The most inspiring thing about blockchain is that it can help us understand that we are all parts of this gigantic organism called humanity and with this notion, we can act accordingly. With the advent of the Internet we have the infrastructure to connect, but do we have the logic and the reason to connect? We can send files and information to the other corner of the world, but can we exchange value directly and securely with people we do not know or trust? Now technology and behavior changes start to converge to the point where people will be equipped with the tools to build trust and reputation in decentralized peer-to-peer manner. This is what we are building with ReCheck. Now we can start to see the impact of things we do and the relations between everything. We can spend smarter and change our consumer behavior. For example, I believe that in the future reputation systems on blockchain will determine prices of items.

What could be the biggest benefit from the blockchain technology for us as a society?

The biggest benefit of blockchain for our society is the change in the paradigm how we organize our relations and escaping the “Zero-sum game” mentality – one person’s gain is equivalent to another’s loss, so the net change in wealth or benefit is zero. Now centralized institutions and big corporations have the power to impose their rules of the game, extract value and dominate. Their profits come at the expense of people lacking the mechanisms and resources to play as equals and get what they deserve. On blockchain, people join networks with consensus algorithms and transparency where you are naturally incentivized to follow the accepted rules because the technology will make sure you get a fair share of the value created. And this is a game changer.

What are your expectations for the conference?

My expectations are to accelerate the development of the communities of free people that harness the potential of blockchain and other emerging technologies to transform our societies. Big thanks for your time and efforts, Emiliyan! We are more than happy to have you as an influencer for upcoming changes on our side and we are eager to welcome you on the stage of LibertyBits 2018 on April 24th at Sofia Tech Park.
