Speaker’s Showcase: 6 Q&A with Nana Karlstetter

Today we are pleased to introduce you Dr. Nana Karlstetter. She is working on structures and functionalities for sustainable transformation. She develops and manages projects mostly in the fields of digital security/free software and resilience/climate change. Nana has studied Philosophy, Mathematics, and Psychology and holds a Ph.D. in Applied Economics. She has decades of experience in working with and in self-organized movements, brings academic expertise in complex systems, process methods and organizational capacities as well as practical expertise from projects with businesses, NGOs, and foundations.

Who are you?

I develop and facilitate projects mainly in the area of free software and environmental resilience. I work on realizing sustainable, just and future-proof transformation. I work for the p≡p foundation. p≡p stands for pretty Easy privacy. Our software automatically end-to-end-encrypts digital communication. Our goal is mass encryption through privacy by default.

Why did you decide to join the speaker’s list of LibertyBits conference?

I want to know more about the scene in Bulgaria. And I particularly like the relation of tech and privacy issues with life off the grid. I found this a rare and very important connection.

What is your understanding of “liberty” (freedom) and what are the most underestimated threats to our modern society?

For me freedom is directly coupled with justice in the sense of access to resources and opportunities, be it technological ones or our mere existential basis, such as water, food, etc. Liberty necessarily is based on a peaceful and sustainable use of all the common goods that secure our life. The right to privacy and information and thus a free and open Internet is one of the most important vehicles to get there. Being free on the Internet means protected communications and unexploited personal data. Our data is no raw material neither for corporations nor to corrode change. The two most underestimated threats as I see it are:

  1. Optimisation for profit without restrictions. We face serious environmental challenges, these are proven and so serious, that they require aligning all options towards sustainability as a first priority.
  2. Humankind has to overcome national borders and religion in the sense of concepts of competition and war. If we don’t learn how to discuss problems in truth and with equal rights and if we don’t learn how to realize solutions peacefully we will not survive while having destroyed a lot of nature’s beauty.

What would you say to everyone who thinks that keeping privacy is irrelevant for them because they have nothing to hide?

If you prefer to be a machine, go ahead.

What is the easiest way to protect our privacy if we are not so tech-savvy people?

Use p≡p. Inform yourself. Read this: https://www.activism.net/cypherpunk/manifesto.html Make privacy an issue you care about and you will find people and tools that fit for your purpose.

What are your expectations for the conference?

Learn, enable, listen, empower, digest, move, achieve, accelerate. Thank you very much for your time and devotion, Dr. Karlstetter! We are counting the days until the start of LibertyBits Conference 2018, where we will have you on stage.
