Our next speaker comes from Switzerland – the world’s treasury and the country, known for its best application of democracy. He is a digital pirate by heart and advocates for privacy, freedom and against state surveillance. It is an honor for us to introduce you to Mr. Patrick Stählin.
Grützi, Patrick! Please tell us a bit about yourself!
I’m a former board-member of the Swiss Pirate-Party and active member of the Digital Society Switzerland. My main focus is on security policy and surveillance.
Why did you decide to join the speaker’s list of LibertyBits conference?
It’s important to talk to people to instill change in areas we see a need for more activism. I hope to give an experts opinion on my topics, to encourage to local and global activists by showing to them, that they are not alone in their fight.
What is your understanding of “liberty” (freedom) and what are the most underestimated threats to our modern society?
Freedom means to be yourself and to do as you please, in cyber- and meat-space, unrestricted by laws or social norms imposed on you. These liberties are being more and more restricted by doing everything technically possible without thinking about the social impact of those actions.
What would you say to everyone who thinks that keeping privacy is irrelevant for them because they have nothing to hide?
You do have curtains on your windows, right?
What is the most easy way to protect our privacy if we are not so tech-savvy people?
Install Ad-blockers and privacy-tools like Disconnect in your browser.
What are your expectations for the conference?
I hope to engage with like-minded people and at least make them aware that there are two sides to digitalization. Thanks a lot, Patrick! That is our goal as well for this conference. We will see us on the stage of #LibertyBits2018.
